Surgery in movement disorders and other functional disorders

Some patients continously address some questions to our information center about what kind of  clinical entities that are subject of functional surgery. Traditionally all of the movement disorders including Parkinson´disease, tremor and dystonic patients are wide accepted and wellknown susceptible to improve after deep brain stimulation (DBS) however other neurological conditions as Tic (including Tourette syndrome), dyskinetic movements patients of any aetiology can be good candidates to improve dramatically after DBS. For the other hand, other medical conditions as Depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) refractory to common medical therapy can improve after DBS. The surgical procedure is in essential the same in all these psyquiatric or neurological conditions but the neurological nucleous target is potentially different in such medical disorders, for example in Parkinson disease the Luys sub-thalamic nucleous is the most accepted target for DBS meanwhile the Globus pallidus is more frequently considered as a target when a dystonic patients must be subbmitted to DBS. Tremoric patients achieve a benefit when  the VIM thalamic nucleous is stimulated. Other psychiatric conditions as OCD, improve after accumbens nucleous electrodes implantation. For this reason we insist that the methodology is in essential the same but the target change sustantially depending on the medical condition.
